Background

Wiki Loves Monuments in September is an international photo contest that celebrates cultural heritage in each of the participating countries. Images submitted to the competition will be freely available for reuse in Wikimedia Commons, and the Finnish Heritage Agency will archive a selection of the photos for permanent archival.

What

In the Finnish competition protected buildings, significant built environments, archaeological and World heritage sites around Finland are photographed. They are listed on pages in Wikipedia, and they can also be viewed on a map even on mobile. That will make it easy to take the location list with you for the photoshoot.

This year it is possible to participate in the Finnish competition by rephotographing historical images found in the Finna.fi service. The images of 1918 are a special theme for the competition. The old and the new image form then-and-now-pairs while the locations create sites of remembrance on the map.

Where

The worldwide Wiki Loves Monuments was first arranged in the Netherlands in 2010. The 2011 edition holds the Guinness World Record for the World’s biggest photo competition. Last year over 10 000 photographers participated in the competition with 245 000 photos. Finland took part for the first time, with 92 photographers 2 259 photos.

When

Participating photos are sent to the competition by uploading them via the monuments lists during the competition period from 1st to 30th September 2018. Images can be photographed right away or they can be already existing images. The 10 winners of the Finnish competition will join the international competition.

The contest is arranged in Finland by Wikimedia Finland and the National Heritage Agency in collaboration with Finna and Ajapaik.
